Each year, more than 500,000 Scouts in more than 100 countries take to the airwaves on the third full weekend in October — and this year will be no different. The Jamboree On The Air (JOTA) is an annual Scouting and Amateur Radio event sponsored by the World Scout Bureau of the World Organization of the Scout Movement (WOSM). JOTA is an annual event where Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts and Girl Guides from all over the world speak to each other via Amateur Radio.

With solar flux numbers not seen since 2004, the higher HF bands have seen a surge in activity. The solar flux has been at least 100 since August 20. On September 10, it reached 116, rising to 121 the next day. It climbed steadily, reaching a peak of 190 on Saturday, September 24. While higher solar flux is exciting news for all hams, Technicians should definitely take note: The 10 meter band is the only HF band where Techs have phone privileges.

Schmidt, W7HAS, the ARRL briefed several members of the National Security Staff on the capabilities of the Amateur Radio Service to communicate in emergencies. ‘The White House is looking for ways that the great work of Amateur Radio operators can continue to support emergencies in the future with particular attention to increased use and dependency on internet based technologies’

This is your opportunity to calculate or guess when ARISSat-1 falls out of orbit. This is defined as the time it crosses an altitude of 78 kilometers, which is considered to be the point of no return.

A RADIO used during the Second World War by one of Coventry?s ‘secret listeners’ to help defend the country has been donated to the Herbert Art Gallery and Museum.

The national treasure was used by the city?s very own secret ?spook? – Frederick Arthur Noakes (Arthur) – between 1940 and 1945.

Nominations are open for the 2011 ARRL International Humanitarian Award. This award is conferred upon an amateur or amateurs who demonstrate devotion to human welfare, peace and international understanding through Amateur Radio. The League established the annual prize to recognize those radio amateurs who have used ham radio to provide extraordinary service to others in times of crisis or disaster.

“Amateur Radio is Alive and Well -And Needs You!” will be presented at Indiana State University’s Cunningham Memorial Library on Tuesday, Oct. 4 at 7 p.m.

The interactive, hour-long event will provide the basics of amateur radio, also known as ham radio, and how to become licensed, said Steve Hardin, interim chair of the library’s reference/instruction department.
