A video of Daniel Rosenberg’s presentation to DEFCON 19 highlighting security flaws in the Amateur Radio ROSE packer radio networking protocol is now available. This presenttion will discuss in detail the development of an exploit for a remotely triggerable vulnerability in the Linux kernel’s implementation of the ROSE amateur radio protocol. In doing so, a number of new kernel exploitation techniques will be demonstrated. In addition, this talk will present a working example of the installation of a remote kernel backdoor. We will conclude with a demonstration of this exploit against a live system and a discussion of future work in kernel exploitation and mitigation.
Such was the infamy of the robbery at Lloyds Bank in Baker Street, central London on September 11, 1971 – dubbed The Baker Street Robbery – that it inspired the 2008 Hollywood flick The Bank Job.
For the 15th year in a row, the Fredericton Amateur Radio Club will be out in force on Halloween night to help police officers keep their eyes and ears open to any mischief-makers.
The Lake County Amateur Radio Emergency Services group last week celebrated its 10th anniversary of helping out at the Great Floridian Triathlon in Clermont.
Montana State University now has a satellite in space, and it’s already talking.
Early Friday morning, shortly before 4 a.m. Mountain time, a student-built satellite called Explorer-1 [Prime] roared into the sky on a NASA rocket launched from the Vandenberg Air Force Base in California. Almost two hours later, the satellite separated from the rocket and starting circling the Earth.

Access Broadband over Power line (BPL) places broadband data on existing electrical wiring-outdoor distribution and to the home-using radio frequencies ranging between 3 MHz and 80 MHz. These are the same frequencies used for shortwave radio broadcasting, amateur radio communications, and the low VHF TV band (channels 2-6). With the DTV transition complete and only about 40 full-power TV stations transmitting on these channels, BPL is unlikely to have a major impact on TV reception, although at short distances the Third harmonic of BPL signals might interfere with high-VHF (channels 7-13) reception. Viewers of low-power TV stations that moved to the low VHF channels left behind after full power stations’ DTV transition are much more likely to have problems with BPL signals.
Amateur radio advocates are disappointed the FCC didn?t do more in its latest action regarding “access broadband over power line” systems.
The commission released a Second Report and Order on BPL Monday. ARRL, a national association for hams, has been active on this issue. It noted that the R&O is in response to a court order that instructed the commission to revise its BPL rules, which ARRL had challenged earlier. The association believes BPL emissions “pollute” the radio spectrum, including bands used by amateur radio, and that BPL has failed as a method of delivering broadband connectivity.
Members of the Russian ‘Ural Contest Group’ (UCG) will be

The Hurricane Watch Net (HWN) will activate at 8:30 AM (EDT) October 27 for Hurricane Rina, currently a Category 1 storm. The HWN will be active on 14.325 MHz to report observed conditions to WX4NHC, the Amateur Radio station at the National Hurricane Center (NHC). Depending on conditions, the HWN may also elect to activate on 7.268 MHz.
