WIA: ACMA Warns Unlicensed Radio Communicators

The Australian Communication and Media Authority (ACMA) has issued warning notices to six radio communications hobbyists, citing breaches of the Radiocommunications Act. The hobbyists, comprising those using the Citizen Band (CB) and Amateur Radio frequencies are from Tasmania, Victoria, New South Wales and South Australia.

Carrollton-based Bears on Patrol and the West Georgia Amateur Radio Society are offering a $100 reward to anyone who finds and returns a missing weather balloon.

The balloon was launched in Carrollton on Nov. 6. It contained radio tracking equipment and two GoPro cameras.

The Daily DX http://www.dailydx.com/ is reporting that Simon Luttrell, HS0ZIB/G6JFY http://hs0zib.com/, has been granted an “invitation” from senior officials within the Myanmar Ministry of Post and Telecommunications and the Ministry of Tourism to visit Bagan, Myanmar to operate a four-day PSK31 “micro DXpedition.” Myanmar — formerly known as Burma — has not been on the Amateur Radio bands since 2004.

PLT Radio Interference (UK)

Like many radio amateurs across the country, Dave M0TAZ has had his radio reception ruined by interference from polluting PLT devices.

He writes:

Last week I decided to report the PLT problem I experience at home.

I found that in the main the amateur bands are notched but the interference, although lower, is still present. When I use / monitor the 5 MHz allocation the interference is severe.

Poor Man?s DXpedition

In November of 2009, Jerry Ball, N7FYP, and I did something that most other old hams would not do: We rented a contest station in another country and went on what I consider a “poor man?s DXpedition.” Neither Jerry, age 69, nor I, age 64, are serious contesters; also, like many of you, we avidly read about DXpeditions. It often seems that only the younger hams can have adventures like these.
